ZF pursues the approach of perfect system tuning. A modern automatic transmission is a highly complex component with extremely tight tolerances. The Myth of the “Lifetime Fill”
You may have read in your service manual or heard from your dealership that the transmission fluid is a “lifetime fill” and therefore never needs to be changed. But what does that actually mean?
From the perspective of many automakers, a vehicle’s “lifespan” is often estimated at around 150,000 to 180,000 kilometers or approximately 8 to 10 years. After that, the car is officially considered to be “at the end of its life cycle.”
The reality, however, is different:
Transmission fluid undergoes a natural aging process. High operating temperatures, stop-and-go traffic, or towing cause the additives in the fluid to degrade, reducing its lubricating properties. Anyone who wants to drive their vehicle longer than the calculated “lifetime” cannot avoid changing the fluid.
What is recommended instead?
ZF itself - as an expert in mechanics - is significantly more realistic here than some vehicle manufacturers. To maintain the full functionality and maximum mileage of your transmission, a change interval is recommended:
Recommendation: Every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometers (or after 8 years at the latest).
Under heavy use (frequent highway driving, spirited driving, towing): the change should be performed closer to the lower end of the recommended range.
A timely oil change is the most cost-effective safeguard against expensive transmission damage.
